Most contractors will attempt to tell you that all shingles are created equal. In respect to the basic material make-up, yes, in many ways they are the same. The anatomy of an Asphalt shingle is comprised of a few basic components.
The first material put on the fiberglass mat is the asphalt that makes the shingle tough and water-resistant.
Filler and Granules
Next, a finely pulverized minerals, called stabilizers or filler are mixed in with opaque granules are adhered to the asphalt. These ceramic-coated opaque granules are what protect the shingles from harmful ultraviolet rays and also provide the shingle with its color. Lastly, a layer of copper is added for algae resistance.
The real difference in quality is in the manufacturer and how much faith they have in their product. This is most evident in the fine print of their manufacturer warranty.
